The expedition you are about to begin was inspired by five men: (From left) Randall Kenan, Quentin Tarantino, Wright Thompson, Richard Wright, and Josh Neufeld. Each of these men contributed to the Southern genre through different movies and texts. The locations you will be visiting are somehow connected to their works- whether it is a set from Tarantino's Django Unchained or a restaurant on Bourbon St. that one of Neufeld's characters may have dined in. As you arrive at each location, we will place you in the hands of these authors. They will serve as your "Tour Guides" so to speak. You will find under each author's respective tab a description of one of his literary works along with a few relevant destinations. When you are visiting these places, keep in mind the literary work that is associated with that specific area. If it is a location where an author is from, ask yourself what things may have inspired him? If it is a place where a film was shot, take a closer look at the area to understand why it was chosen and try to imagine what it looked like in the time period the film took place. If you are at a historical site like, try to imagine what the atmosphere would have been like during the past. It is our goal that by truly experiencing these locations, you will gain a better understanding of the history of slavery in the United States and the impact it continues to have on our society.
